Helpful Tips
Download the DiDi app before arrival for reliable ride-hailing in major Colombian cities.
Buy a TuLlave card in Bogotá to tap-and-pay on TransMilenio buses and integrated metro system.
Use the Medellín MetroCable lines to reach hillside neighborhoods with integrated metro tickets.
Book domestic flights through Viva Air for budget travel between cities like Bogotá, Medellín and Cartagena.
Common Scams to Avoid
At El Dorado in Bogotá, unofficial porters in the arrival hall grab bags without asking and then demand inflated tips. Keep a firm grip on your luggage and politely decline any unrequested help.
Taxi dispatchers outside Colombian airports sometimes slip a private car into the official queue and quote a flat 'tourist rate' far above the metered fare. Insist on a clearly marked airport taxi and ask the dispatcher to confirm the meter will be used.
Currency-exchange kambios inside the terminals advertise 'no commission' but bury a poor rate in the fine print. Compare the rate against the mid-market figure shown on your phone or use an ATM inside the terminal for a fairer deal.
